Crowds flock to sunny Carnoustie Gala Week finale

The sunshine brought a huge turnout at the finale of Carnoustie Gala Week on Saturday.

The town was already in high spirits after last week’s announcement golf’s Open Championship will return in 2018.

Gala Day didn’t disappoint after a week of activities, despite the number of floats on display being slightly down on previous years.

The event kicked off with the traditional float parade from Panmure Industrial Estate to Carnoustie Park. The parade was led by Carnoustie Pipe Band, Arbroath RBLS Pipe Band and the Angus Centre for Performing Arts.

Floats included I’m A Celebrity by Carnoustie Scout Group, Fireman Sam by Scallywags Nursery, and Carnoustie Leisure Centre with Top of the Pops.

The X Factor, Last of the Summer Wine and Heartbeat were also represented. Residents cheered the procession every step of the way before making their way to Carnoustie Park for an afternoon of entertainment.

As well as displays and events in the main area, there were many stalls and carnival rides to keep the youngsters happy.

Other events during the week included a pool competition, songs of praise, quiz night, a putting competition and a disco.

Carnoustie Gala Committee chairwoman Mary Bushnell told The Courier: “The sun has shone and it’s fantastic to see so many people here today.

“The number of floats this year is down, which is disappointing, but that’s down to circumstances. However, everybody that has designed a float has done a fantastic job.

“Gala Week has been well attended and today just tops it off. It’s also a nice way to end a great week for Carnoustie with the news about the Open.”

She also paid tribute to everyone who volunteered as stewards, the gala committee for its year-long efforts and everyone who supported the event.

On tiller duties on the day as master of ceremonies was Councillor Brian Boyd.

He said: “It’s been an excellent week for Carnoustie and the gala committee should be applauded for its hard work.”
