An armed response unit was called to Lochee after a man pretending to have a gun threatened police officers trying to help him, Dundee Sheriff Court has heard.
Armed officers had ‘red dotted’ Garry Ian Hay with a Tazer before he was brought under control during the incident on June 15. Sentence on Hay, 37, of Ancrum Court, was further deferred for a psychiatric report to be prepared.
On Thursday, Dundee Sheriff Court also heard officers had only been looking for Hay as his sister was concerned after he cracked himself over the head with a bottle and ran away.
Hay admitted that he had behaved in a threatening and abusive manner at Whorterbank, Lochee, by brandishing a pair of scissors towards officers, claiming to be in possession of a gun and refusing to show his hands after making the claim.
Depute fiscal Keith Robertson told the court that in the evening prior to the incident Hay had been drinking at his sister’s house and was treated as a missing person after he injured himself and ran away.
Officers attending his home address to look for him at 5.30am the following morning were met with a hostile Hay who claimed to have a machine gun concealed under a duvet cover.
The court heard: “Police were concerned and contacted the firearms unit to attend.”
Hay also admitted struggling with officers and making racist remarks towards an officer when he was taken to police headquarters.
He also pled guilty to stealing a laptop and other items from an unsecured car in Lochee on September 11 2013, failing to attend court, and breaching a community payback order requiring him to attend reports.
Sentence was deferred until July 31 and Hay was remanded in custody and ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment.
