Golf legend Sir Nick Faldo has tucked into award-winning fish and chips from Gourdon during the Scottish Open in Aberdeen.

The three-times Claret Jug-winner made sure he kept up a tradition started when he won his first Open Championship in Scotland at Muirfield 27 years ago.

He turned to social media to ask fans which chipper had the best fish supper.

Alex Grahame, co-owner of Hornblowers restaurant and takeaway with his wife Ruth, then tweeted the six-times Major winner to invite him for a delicious fish supper at their ‘plaice’.

Explaining how the tradition started, Sir Nick said: “It was on the way to Muirfield in ’87. My family and I had driven down to Gleneagles that evening but got in late so I said ‘let’s go for fish and chips’.

“To cut a long story short I won and so after that it became my mini-tradition to pull into town and to have fish and chips the first night possible.”

Mr Grahame, who has just been awarded a Certificate of Excellence from customer review website TripAdvisor, delivered the supper himself on Tuesday night.

He said: “We are over the moon about this and it’s a pleasure to meet one of the golfing greats and provide him with his fish supper.”
