Dundee petrolhead Gordon Robertson has just raised a massive £17,494.54 for charity, by indulging in his Porsche passion with his daughter.
After battling and beating thyroid cancer at Ninewells, Gordon was told his condition was genetic, and his young daughter Lucy is undergoing regular check-ups.
He decided to help the Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre, adjacent to Ninewells, the only way he knew how, by burning rubber.
This spring he completed a 1,500-mile tour of nine classic British racecourses in a vintage 1965 Porsche 911 racing car, and a whole starting grid of petrol-powered celebs.
All the while, seven-year-old Lucy was in the passenger seat.
Thanks to the work of the staff at Ninewells, she probably hasn’t inherited his illness, but she has definitely inherited his love of speed.
Gordon, 40, said: “We were on the race track, doing perhaps a hundred miles an hour, and I looked over, and she was sound asleep!
“Full racing harness, suit, helmet, and completely conked out.”
Formula One racing ace Mark Webber, Top Gear’s enigmatic Stig and TV’s Vicki Butler-Henderson all joined the pair to help raise money.
Gordon said: “The celebrity endorsements were really helpful. I’m an ex-racing driver and meeting these people from the motoring world was really thrilling.
“The reactions on the road from passing cars were the best.
“Because of the fast cars, and the cause, I think people were really enthused, they wanted to be a part of it.”
Gordon and Lucy smashed their original target of £2,000 to raise almost nine times that to help in the fight against cancer.
Gordon said: “We wanted to raise this money to say thanks for all the help I received and all the help Lucy has received.”
Lucy had her thyroid removed because of fears her father’s thyroid cancer was hereditary, and she continues to be monitored by staff at Ninewells.
Gordon’s job as a Porsche driving instructor gave him access to the top-of-the-range cars, and Porsche’s executive clientele; as well as Porsche’s mammoth publicity department.
Money is still coming in for the car-crazy pair, and they’re already planning another adventure to raise even more money.
