Drink-driver’s pump problems fuelled suspicion

Drink-driver’s pump problems fuelled suspicion

A man alerted police to his drink-driving after he parked so close to a petrol pump he struggled to get out, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.

Sam Waldron, 21, of The Hazels, Dundee, was driving his uncle’s car when police spotted him behaving suspiciously at the Shell garage in West Marketgait on June 14.

Depute fiscal Susan Ruta told the court: “At around 1.50am police on a mobile patrol saw the accused driving the Vauxhall motor car and he was seen to go into the forecourt of the petrol station.

“He parked so close to the fuel pump he had difficulty getting out of it.”

The court heard Waldron told police it was his uncle’s car and because officers could smell alcohol on him they breathalysed him.

He had previously pled guilty to driving after consuming alcohol (83 microgrammes), driving without a full licence while only holding a provisional licence and without supervision or displaying L plates, as well as driving without valid insurance.

He also pled guilty to breaching a bail condition imposed in another case by contacting his ex-partner by phone.

Sheriff McFarlane sentenced Waldron to a total of five months in prison for all the offences.

The sentence will run concurrently with a jail term he is already serving, which means it will not affect his release date in December.
