Dundee have taken Luxembourg international Laurent Jans on trial.
Dens boss Paul Hartley confirmed he is having a look at the 21-year-old, who is a right-sided midfielder but can also play in defence.
The Fola Esch player, who has represented his country 14 times including matches against Portugal and Russia, flew to Scotland on Sunday night and reported for training with the Dark Blues on Monday.
Hartley said: “He has come in today and is over here until next week.
“He is a Luxembourg international with 14 caps who has been recommended to us so we will take a look at him. He is a versatile guy who can play at full-back, central defence or in midfield and is only 21.
“I have seen footage of him and will be assessing him further as the week goes on.”
Even as Saturday’s Scottish Premiership curtain-raiser against Kilmarnock looms large, Hartley is determined to add to his squad.
He stated: “I hope that we can get one or two more in but that may depend on other players leaving, I don’t know, but I definitely want to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes.”
The Dundee gaffer also revealed that he has dropped his interest in former Blackpool left-back Adam Dodd, who played for them as a trialist down at Sheffield United.
“We have put that on the back burner just now,” he said.
“We are not going to do anything in the meantime. We are looking at different areas of the park where we feel we need more strength and competition.”
Meanwhile, summer signing Phil Roberts has suffered a suspension hangover and will sit out the Killie game.
Hartley said: “Phil is suspended because of the four-game suspension he had when he was with Falkirk. We knew that would be the case when we signed him so it’s not really a problem.
“It will quickly go by over the next month and he is a very fit guy anyway who will be champing at the bit to be back.“James McPake is back available again while Gary Irvine will train tomorrow.
“Scott Bain was back for his first day’s training. Kevin McBride has a knock but, overall, the squad is looking pretty strong.”
