One of Dundee’s best known hotels has announced plans for a major expansion.
The three-star Woodlands Hotel, in Panmure Terrace, Broughty Ferry, is seeking planning permission to add 26 bedrooms to its existing complement of 39.
This would see an extension built to the rear of the main building and the creation of landscaped gardens.
The architects for the project, ARKTX, said the development would enhance Broughty Ferry’s attraction as a location for smaller-scale tourism.
“As there is no other hotel at this end of Dundee which can offer this provision, it is vital to both the success of the Woodlands Hotel and indeed the wider hotel provision that the city can offer that this application is granted.
“The additional bedroom accommodation will also ensure the sustainable future of the health club, which provides a valuable asset to the local community.”
ARKTX said council policy acknowledged that conference facilities were important for Dundee.
“The Woodlands Hotel is currently missing out on regional conferences, for although they have the conference facilities they do not have sufficient bedroom accommodation to cater for such events,” a statement said.
“These proposals would rectify this and allow potential development of this vitally important market which has the potential to provide spin-off benefits to the local community.”
The Woodlands, which is part of the Best Western chain, already boasts a gymnasium, swimming pool, spa bath, sauna and steam room, along with meeting and conference facilities, a ballroom, two bars and a restaurant.
The original building is a large, stone-built manor house, with ornate stone carvings and timber sash and case windows, although it has modern extensions.
ARKTX said: “The new extension will result in the creation of two landscaped courtyard areas, an orangery with adjoining gallery space and additional storage alongside 26 additional en-suite double bedrooms.
“In order to provide high-quality visitor accommodation of expected contemporary standards, the development is necessary to ensure a sustainable future.”
No extra parking spaces are planned as the car park can already take 102 vehicles.
