Plans for the final stage of a £40 million regeneration scheme in Perth are on display to the public.

Revisions have been made to the masterplan for phase five of Muirton Park and this will result in a further 200 houses being available to sell or rent as part of a scheme to transform the former much-maligned housing estate.

Phase one of the mammoth project was completed in 2007, with the second stage completed two years later, phase three finishing in 2011 and phase four being completed in April 2013.

As part of an effort to erode the stigma previously attached to the estate, several streets were renamed. Familiar street names such as Ainslie Gardens made way for new ones like Lark Avenue and Kestrel Way.

The area is known as Muirton Park, in recognition of St Johnstone FC’s old ground, which used to be sited there.

Now, Caledonia Housing Association, in partnership with Perth and Kinross Council and Fairfield Housing Co-operative, has launched a community consultation exercise where those who attend will have the opportunity to see the plans for the concluding stage of the project.

Representatives from each of the organisations will be there to gather people’s views on the proposals and seek other ideas form the local community.

A spokesperson for Caledonia Housing Association yesterday said: “The downturn in the housing market has delayed completion of the regeneration but with the economy and housing market conditions improving, the conclusion of the final phases is gathering momentum.

“The next stage (phase five) is well under way, with designs submitted to the council for planning approval, and the procurement of the remaining phases is due to commence on completion of the consultation exercise.”

A council spokesperson said: “We hope members of the local community will take the opportunity to attend one of the forthcoming consultation events to find out what is proposed for the area. Feedback from the local community is valuable and we are keen for people to share their thoughts and ideas with us.”

It is anticipated stage five will start this year, with the project completed by 2018.

The consultation launch is at the North Muirton Community Campus, Perth. There will be further consultation events at the campus every Monday morning, Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening until Friday September 5.
