Dunfermline players have been basking in the glory of ending Fife rivals Raith Rovers’ time as Petrofac Training Cup holders since Tuesday night.
However, manager Jim Jefferies has brought them back to earth by telling them the serious stuff is only now beginning.
Jefferies said: “Don’t get me wrong, it was a great performance and a deserved win secured by a wonder goal from Ross Millen.
“However, the league is our priority. There is no point in beating Raith if we do not follow that up with a similar performance against Brechin.
“Our win the other night built on a good performance against Annan last weekend, however to do that against a higher league team that had players with plenty of top-flight experience is a real boost to everyone here.
“We have a good squad here and have plenty of competition for places, so the players need to remain at the high standards they have set in their opening two games if they are to keep their places.”
The Pars miss skipper Josh Falkingham through suspension, although Andy Stirling is included after shaking off a knock and Alex Whittle is available after suspension.
Brechin boss Ray McKinnon was at East End Park on Tuesday, and Jefferies is convinced the display from his side will have given him plenty to think about.
Jefferies said: “I know Ray was here watching and he will have seen the capability that this team has when everyone is on song.
“I am sure he will have gone away to try and think about ways to stop us if we play like that again.
“However, they will also be looking for any signs of complacency and they have players that can hurt us if there is.”
McKinnon was impressed and he left Fife thinking he had seen the League 1 winners before a ball was kicked.
He said: “This is probably the hardest fixture we could start our season with as Dunfermline were terrific the other night.
“They were the favourites already but they will be the favourites by a mile if they keep playing like that.”
He added: “Last season we gave them plenty of problems at both our place and East End Park.
“We drew and won at Glebe and came within a few seconds of getting a point with only 10 men in one game at their place. We will take confidence from those games.”
“We also pushed a Championship side, Dumbarton, all the way last weekend in the Scottish League Cup and we deserved to take that game into extra-time at least. If we can play like that again at Dunfermline they may just not get things all their own way.”
Brechin welcome back defender Darren McCormack with boss McKinnon looking to add a striker from a Premiership club on loan in time for kick off.
