The family of a supermum have paid tribute after she raised more than £2,000 by completing the Race for Life just a month before her death.
Gail Cargill passed away on August 5 after being diagnosed with cancer in her chest earlier this year, at the age of 56.
Following the tragic loss, her family have praised her determination to make the most of her remaining days, which led to £2,027 being raised for Cancer Research.
Gail took on the Race for Life on July 5. She completed the 5K in Perth despite the cancer spreading to her abdomen and lymph nodes.
She was joined by her three sons, Marc Cargill, 33, Ryan Cargill, 29, and Christopher Honeyman, 20. She was also joined by her sons’ partners, Andrea Wright and Kerrie Duff.
To add to the emotional day, Gail’s partner Alex Morrison walked her over the finishing line with the rest of her family.
Gail lived in Dundee for more than 35 years, and still has several friends and family in the city, but moved to Perth soon after starting her family.
Andrea, who spoke on behalf of the three sons, praised Gail’s efforts during her treatment.
She said: “We all walked with her it was a really emotional day for everyone. I think it meant a lot to her for her sons to take on help her walk round.
“Two weeks after completing the Race for Life Gail was admitted to hospital as she was in so much pain with her cancer.
“But even though she was in hospital and was constantly in pain, she was making sure everyone was OK and still smiling at everyone with her fantastic smile. She lit up the hospital ward and never complained once.”
She smashed her initial fundraising target of £1,000, raising more than double that through her “Gail Force” Just Giving page.
Away from the fundraising exploits, Andrea paid tribute to Gail’s attitude during her treatment.
Andrea said: “She tried her best to live a normal happy life doing day-to-day things.
“She was determined to beat the cancer and not let it take over her life. Any time you saw Gail while she was going through her chemotherapy you would think she was just a normal 56-year-old.
“Gail was always thinking of others and did not want to have other lives disrupted by this terrible disease. All of Gail’s family couldn’t be more proud of the fantastic woman that she was.”
