Gary Mackay-Steven has confirmed that he will almost certainly be leaving Dundee United.
The winger is in the final year of his contract at Tannadice and has stalled on putting pen to paper on a new deal.
Earlier this week, club chairman Stephen Thompson said the player’s ambitions appear to lay down south.
That is something GMS has made no secret about, having previously spent time at Liverpool as a kid.
Now the 23-year-old, who was signed from Airdrie in the summer of 2011 and has played more than 100 games for United, has revealed that this will be his last season with the Tangerines.
When asked if he will not be signing a new deal with the club, he replied: “Yes I think that’s what will happen.
“Right now I don’t want to think about that. I should just concentrate on my football.”
When it was put to him that his decision could possibly leave him in a difficult position, Mackay-Steven said: “Even in the last few years when there’s been speculation, I’ve learned not to listen to any of it.
“I don’t read any papers and I just concentrate day in, day out and hopefully my football will take care of itself.”
Mackay-Steven did deny that the fact it had not worked out for him at Liverpool still gnawed away at him.
He said: “Not really Liverpool is in the past for me. Down in England the Championship and ultimately the Premier League is where everyone wants to play.
“It’s definitely my aim and I know there’s a lot of hard work ahead of me, but ultimately I feel as if I can get there.
“I just have to take it one step at a time and hopefully it comes.”
He added: “I think every player would ultimately want to go to England and go to as high a level as you can go.
“There are a lot of big clubs in England I’d like to go there but whether that is now or in the future then I’m not sure. There’s a lot of speculation and that’s the same for every window.
“Until something concrete comes along then I’m happy at United trying to do as well as I can.”
