Jim Rout joined the ambulance service aged 27 and later became an ambulance care assistant. He has travelled all over the country with his job and says there is no such thing as a normal day. He said: “I’ve done CPR in the back of an ambulance at 60mph when we picked up a man with heart problems. “He went into arrest and I did CPR from Douglas to Ninewells and then, about six or seven months later, he shook my hand. “Things like that make it all worthwhile.”
