During his years as mayor, from 1978 to 1989, his tight fiscal policies pulled the city out of severe financial difficulties. His mark on the city was set when the Queensboro Bridge, connecting Manhattan to Queens, was renamed in his honour in 2011. He was fast-talking, opinionated and sometimes rude. He also appeared on talk shows and played himself in a number of movies.
