Members of the Royal Family will enjoy the Commonwealth Games in comfort thanks to a Dundee firm.

Furniture and fire door manufacturer Dovetail Enterprises has picked up a £23,000 contract to provide 150 specially-themed chairs for dignitaries attending a range of events at the forthcoming games.

The Dunsinane Industrial Estate-based firm secured the work after winning out in a competitive tender process run through the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games contracting portal.

Keen to offer a unique and Scottish feel to the chairs which will be centre stage, Dovetail asked several fabric suppliers to suggest options for the chair coverings and eventually settled upon Johnstons of Elgin’s Benbecula Woodland and Affric Spruce woollen fabrics.

Dovetail said the partnership was apt as both firms had previous connections to the monrachy with Johnstons holding a Royal Warrant and the Queen Mother having made regular visits to Dovetail’s workshops while staying at Glamis Castle.

Ann Jamieson, sales and marketing manager for Dovetail, said: “The opportunity to be involved in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games is very welcome and we are particularly pleased that our product range will be used for such high-profile attendees of the event. The partnership of Dovetail and Johnstons of Elgin has worked particularly well.”

Dovetail is a supported business which denotes an organisation in which more than 50% of the workforce are disabled and unable to take up work in the open labour market.

The firm – which currently employs 57 staff – turned over £2.3 million last year and recently took a strategic decision to focus on its core contracting business providing doors, furniture, beds and mattresses to a range of sectors including hospitality, healthcare and education.
