Police are investigating the vandalism of campaign signs belonging to Conservative general election candidate Huw Bell.
Culprits have struck at least twice in the Cupar area in the past week. Vandals damaged a sign next to the A91 near the Springfield turn off last week and another sign was targeted closer to the Cupar town boundary.
One of the signs was targeted a second time and spray-painted with an offensive slogan.
Mr Bell said the vandalism echoes incidents that happened in the run-up to the referendum last September.
“Last year many no voters showed their views with banners and field boards across our area,” he said. “Sadly, some mindless individuals did not respect these and tore them down or defaced them.
“I was hoping that this year’s campaign would revert to a more civilised tone. However, sadly, opponents of our positive campaign, instead of arguing with words, have reverted to vandalism.
“We have had field posters vandalised, daubed with disgusting words and, this morning, removed completely.
“I am thankful that the police are taking this matter seriously.”
A Conservative supporter in north east Fife added: “I am sure you will agree that the damage to field signs is disturbing, if not all together surprising. It makes me so sad to see how some people choose to engage with democracy.
“I used to be so proud to tell people I am Scottish, when I lived and worked in south east England, but this is just sickening.”
