Outraged pupils at Grove Academy in Broughty Ferry have been banned from attending their last day of school.
Youngsters were told late on Thursday afternoon that they should not attend on Friday, with some reporting that deputy head Fiona MacIntosh warned that the police could be called if they turned up.
Pupils will not be able to see classmates or teachers, or sign jerseys, and a protest outside the school is planned.
Debbie Findlay, a parent of one of the sixth years, said: “They say it’s about health and safety, it’s just absolutely nanny state of them to cancel 147 pupils’ last day at school because they suspect a few of them may act up.
“This is apparently about the fear that pupils could draw inappropriate things on jumpers and ‘excite the first years’, which I think is absolutely preposterous.
“I know it will have something to do with their league tables, and something to do with their reputation, but these are not problem kids, they’re kids who have worked hard.”
Some pupils were reportedly upset as they intended to bid farewell to a favourite teacher with a present and a meal.
Others complained that being barred from the school will affect their studies. With exams on Tuesday and Monday being a public holiday, opportunities to get some last-minute advice from teaching staff are now slim.
Pupil Isla Connor said: “It is a joke that we’ve been deprived of a last day.”
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “The school has taken a decision regarding the S6 leaving day and this has been communicated directly to pupils and families.”
