A shop boss punched the manager of a rival electrical retailer during a dinner dance at the Malmaison Hotel in Dundee.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard Edward Simpson, 53, hit Ian Lauder twice on the head after he was allegedly “rude” to him.
The court heard that the pair knew each other only by reputation prior to the event on February 7.
Depute fiscal Kirsten Thomson told the court Simpson and Mr Lauder were introduced to each other in the toilets.
She said: “Tensions grew and chit-chat began to turn into a debate.
“The complainer tried to walk away and the accused punched him. The complainer turned round and the accused punched him again.
“The complainer’s glasses fell off and on to the floor broken. He made attempts to protect himself and others could see he had a cut on his head.”
Solicitor David Duncan, defending, said his client is a branch manager for an electrical wholesaler and the victim he hit with “no provocation” was his “direct rival”.
“They didn’t know each other before this but he knew of his name,” Mr Duncan said.
“They were introduced in the bathroom and his position is that the complainer was rude to him. He admits he assaulted him under no provocation other than what was said in the bathroom.”
Simpson, of Victoria Road, Ladybank, admitted that, on February 7, at Malmaison, Whitehall Crescent, Dundee, he assaulted Ian Lauder by repeatedly punching him on the head, to his injury.
Sentencing was deferred until October 30 for Simpson to be of good behaviour.
