John Birrell & Son, of South Street, will cease trading from next Saturday (May 30) after 44 years in business. The announcement was made on Facebook by the Birrell family with “deep regret and sadness”. The statement said: “Due to town changes and an influx of eating places using out of town suppliers we can no longer compete. “This has been the hardest decision we have had to make. Once again we would like to thank customers and suppliers.” Hundreds of residents and former residents took to Facebook to express their sadness at the news. Ruth Wood said: “That is so sad. You will be sorely missed, best tasting fruit and veg! I wish you all the best for the future.” Kirsten Jenkins said: “A real loss to the town. I hope you have plenty of customers before the 30th so we can (reluctantly) send you off with a bang!” Ken Topping said: A very sad loss to the local economy. A well run business over the years. Best of luck to all concerned.”
