A Dundee schoolboy has pedaled his way into pole position in a national cycling competition.

Dundee High School pupil Alfie George is the yellow jersey holder in the U14 section of the British Cycling Youth Circuit Series, a prestigious championship which brings together the best young riders from across the UK in a sequence of multi-stage road races.

Alfie has hit the front after, in the opening two races of the event, notching up his first ever national victories in this age group, firstly at Hetton in Tyne and Wear and then on the Isle of Man.

Alfie said: “I got my first national win in this category in the first race of the season. It was my biggest victory and I trained really hard for it.

“I was delighted to win the Isle of Man event too.

“The series features all the best racers in Britain so I’m very proud to be leading it right now.”

The driven 14-year-old will continue with a punishing yet stamina-building six-day-a-week training regime as he seeks to stay ahead of the competition over the remaining races, which can each be up to 50km long.
