Dundee cemeteries could receive £60,000 to help make any precarious headstones safe.
A report to the city council’s environment committee on Monday will recommend the funding and highlight progress made over the last three years regards dangerous headstones and memorials.
Councillors will hear that 85% of stones throughout the city’s graveyards have been inspected and any dangerous monuments up to 1.5 metres tall have been dealt with.
Environment convener Craig Melville said: “This new investment will allow us to complete the inspection of all the city’s headstones and deal with the more at risk stones.
“I know that officers of the council work very hard to try and contact families through checking records of stones which have had to be made safe.
“This is because the headstones are their property and not that of the council.
“We always deal with these issues as sensitively as possible.
“However, given the age of some of these stones, it is not possible to trace any living relatives.
“We also make sure that when we can get in touch with people, we can make them aware of small grant schemes to help preserve the stones.”
Mr Melville said the city cemeteries offered fascinating insights into local history and said it was important to ensure they were as safe as possible for the many people that visit them each year.
