Firm cracks on with £2 million repair works at Pittenweem Harbour
ByMichael Alexander
Work has begun to repair significant damage caused to the breakwater at Pittenweem Harbour during a violent storm in September 2012.
Fife Council has appointed Farrans Construction to carry out the essential £2 million repair works, which should be completed in six months.
The work involves stabilising the foundation of the breakwater, repairing the various cracks, re-levelling the deck, and installing protection around the foundation of the breakwater.
There will be a high level of activity around the harbour area during the works and a number of lorries delivering materials to the site.
The council says every effort will be made to minimise disruption for residents but there is likely to be very short periods of time when access is partially obstructed while a delivery is made.
The 100m-long breakwater extension was constructed in 1992-93 to provide additional protection to the harbour entrance channel from easterly waves.
