An Angus motorbike racer has been airlifted to hospital after a high-speed crash at the legendary Isle of Man TT.

Arbroath’s Andy Lawson was competing in Sunday’s RST Superbike race the opening event in the 2015 programme at the world’s blue riband road race gathering when he came off his Shirlaws Kawasaki on the 37.7-mile island course.

The 25-year-old Team Moto-Design.co.uk Racing rider was taken by airmed to Noble’s hospital on the island after suffering suspected neck and arm injuries and detained there overnight.

Family and friends are anxiously awaiting news of his condition in the hope that the 2014 Junior Manx Grand Prix winner will be able to continue his participation in the remainder of the week’s programme.

He had been due to compete in a range of classes at the TT and had climbed to 18th place in the superbike race when the accident happened.

He was on the final lap of the gruelling six-lap race and had recorded his first 125mph average lap time.

Lawson’s accident happened just prior to the race being red flagged when top contender Michael Dunlop crashed out after tangling with a slower rider at the Nook.

He escaped serious injury, with the rival competitor suffering a broken clavicle in the incident.

New Zealander Bruce Anstey won the race for his 10th TT victory, the 45-year-old Kiwi recording a final flying lap of over 131mph.
