Gayle’s blog: On your marks, get set…

Good luck to fellow Yompers!
Good luck to fellow Yompers!

I write this in the knowledge that in less than 24 hours, I’ll be marching though the Angus and Perthshire countryside with around 600 other intrepid Yompers.

The very thought leaves me both excited and slightly nervous.

I did the 22-mile bronze route last year, but this year, I’m hoping to go a bit further and conquer the 36.5 mile silver option.

While I don’t think I’d be incapable of doing gold (54 miles), I don’t think I’ve done enough training to attempt this without considerable suffering – and I don’t want to suffer!

And, as my mum (who’s horrified by the idea of me even attempting silver) keeps telling me – there’s no shame in dropping out at bronze.

I’m not going to be a hero: if I don’t feel good, if I’ve got exploding blisters, or if I simply don’t fancy carrying on, then I won’t.

But maybe this is the wrong attitude? Who knows!

While I imagine most people will have done loads of training, there will undoubtedly be a few who have not.

Over the past few months, I’ve slotted in a good few long walks, climbed a few hills, extended my runs and generally maintained a decent level of fitness. I’m hoping this will be enough to carry me through to Glenisla – the finish point for silver Yompers.

Unlike last year, when I had poor quality walking boots, a broken walking pole and no neck protection (resulting in a dodgy ankle and wind rash), I’ve equipped myself with decent gear. I don’t know about fighting fit but I’m feeling pretty good.

Best of luck to fellow Yompers – I’ll see you tomorrow!
