Former Dundee United coach Ian Cathro is set to be appointed assistant manager at Newcastle United.
New Magpies boss Steve McClaren has said he wants his coaching team in place before the players return for pre-season training on July 1, and sources in the north east of England have revealed that Cathro (28) is going to be McLaren’s right-hand man.
Cathro was a coach at Valencia until the summer, when he left for family reasons after moving to Spain with coach Nuno Esprito Santo from Portuguese side Rio Ave in 2014.
He previously worked with United’s youth academy and the SFA’s regional coaching set-up.
Among those who have name-checked Cathro as a big career influence are Ryan Gauld, who came through the ranks at Tannadice before earning a big move to Sporting Lisbon a year ago.
There was speculation Cathro was on the short-list for the Rangers manager’s job.
