An Angus man has been jailed for eight months for assaulting and making racial comments towards police officers.
Richard Martin abused two constables at his Arbroath home and brandished a glass jar at them on May 23.
The 35-year-old appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court and admitted five charges of assault and breach of the peace.
Fiscal depute Jill Drummond said PCs Rod Hamilton and Laura Connelly went to Martin’s door at 3.10pm on another matter.
“On seeing the police he became instantly aggressive to them,” she said.
“As they left, he threw a set of keys, which struck PC Connelly on her leg.”
The officers responded “leniently” and left but the accused attended the police office and continued being abusive to PC Hamilton.
He was then escorted home but subjected the officer to a “barrage” of racial slurs.
In response to caution and charge, he said: “I’m very sorry about the racial comments. You guys are just doing your job.”
Defending Martin, solicitor Angela McLarty said: “He has no explanation for his actions, he was under the influence of alcohol and wishes to apologise to the court.”
Visiting Sheriff Simon Collins said Martin has an “appalling criminal record” with directly analogous offences within the last two years.
“There is no alternative to custody in this case,” he added.
Martin admitted making racial comments to PC Hamilton, twice assaulting him by kicking him on the body, assaulting PC Connelly, and causing a breach of the peace by brandishing a glass jar, all at North Grimsby on May 23.
