Holyrood should be given powers to design a welfare system as new research shows families will be more than £1,800-a-year worse off under Budget plans, the shadow Scottish Secretary has said.
The research, commissioned by Ian Murray from the independent House of Commons Library, shows the impact of the reduction of child tax credits on an average working family in Scotland.
He also slammed acting Labour leader Harriet Harman for backing Conservative plans for limiting the child support payments to two children.
Edinburgh South MP Mr Murray said: “The Government should back Labour’s amendments to the Scotland Bill which would allow the Scottish Parliament to design a welfare system fit for the Scottish people.”
Scottish Secretary David Mundell revealed he would bring forward “substantive” amendments to the Scotland Bill in the House of Commons in September.
However, Mr Mundell refused to rule out changing laws to implement devolution for Scotland in the House of Lords despite vehement SNP opposition to amendments by unelected peers.
