Stemming the flood in a friendly against Rangers last Friday night was enough to convince Arbroath manager Todd Lumsden to give Spanish trialist Sergio Cecillia-Alvarez a deal at the club.
Cecillia-Alvarez had impressed in friendlies against Fraserburgh and Edinburgh City however, his display at Murray Park was enough for Lumsden to offer a one-year deal.
Lumsden said: “It was a disappointing performance from us and we were giving away bad goals as we were not closing people down.
“Sergio came on and helped stabilise us and while we lost 5-0 it would probably have been more if he had not helped plug the gaps. He had shown up well offensively in the earlier games.
“However, his display against Rangers convinced me that we had an all-round player that I wanted to bring to the club.”
Javier Borneka has been released, with Lumsden saying: “Javier did OK however I am lucky to be able to add one more to the pool and that has to be Sergio.”
