Local contractors invited to share in Dundee V&A work

The builders responsible for creating Dundee’s V&A museum are appealing for firms in the area to get involved in the £80 million project.

BAM Construction is inviting local contractors and suppliers to an event next month to discuss the opportunities available to them at the waterfront site.

The move comes after the Tayside construction sector suffered a major blow with the demise of Muirfield Contracts, leaving more than 300 people out of work.

Some union chiefs, as well as local politicians and businessmen, have previously raised fears that the project would bring few oppurtunities to Courier Country businesses, believing much of the work would be outsourced.

But BAM Construction manager Malcolm Boyd said his company is keen to include the local construction sector.

He said: “We want to meet local businesses in person to discuss the V&A Dundee programme and subcontractor packages.”

The major subcontractors already at work on the site will join the BAM team at the event on August 14.

Willie Sawers, deputy convener of Dundee City Council’s policy and resources committee, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for local businesses to see what opportunities are available in the construction of the V&A Dundee building.

“We are very keen that the construction of this world-class building has as wide an economic impact locally as possible.

“This project will deliver jobs for the local area, including modern apprenticeships for young people. I am sure many Dundee companies will be interested in attending this event.”

The free event will run from 8.30am to 10.30am at the Invercarse Hotel, 371 Perth Road, Dundee DD2 1PG.

Interested businesses and parties are invited to turn up on the day.
