Whether it is Tony Blair promising there was nothing more important to the Labour party than “education, education, education” or the SNP’s Scottish Government’s introduction of the Curriculum for Excellence, what goes on in the classroom is always a hot topic at elections.
But is the Scottish education system working?
This year, there have been reports that reading and writing standards are falling, while pupils themselves were in uproar over a Higher Maths paper they said was simply too difficult.
Over the next two days The Courier will examine Scottish education at primary and secondary levels.
On Tuesday we will examine the SNP’s much-vaunted pledge on keeping class sizes below 18 for the youngest pupils and how one council has decided to go its own way.
Then, on Wednesday, we will look at Higher examinations and ask if they are still a good measure of a pupil’s ability and reveal just how many exams are deemed “too difficult” each year.
