A Monifieth pensioner whose body was recovered from the sea off the Tayside coast was described as a “lovely woman”.
Friends and neighbours of the 72-year-old, named locally as Sheila Todd have spoken of their shock over her death.
She died despite a major rescue operation at Arbroath on Wednesday night after entering the water near Victoria Park.
Residents of Milton Place in Monifieth, where Sheila had lived for at least 15 years, paid tribute to the former Macmillan nurse saying she loved playing golf with her friends.
Julie Agnew, who lives nearby, said: “She was a lovely woman.
“I’ve not been here long and my husband knew her better, but it’s such a shock.
“I used to always say hi to her but all I know is she loved her golf,” added Julie.
“She used to teach one of our neighbours how to play and although she was 72, I think she was still playing.”
Another neighbour, Ella Dewer, 74, said: “She was a quiet person but my husband Jim would speak to her quite a lot and fixed the battery of her car when the car wouldn’t start.”
Jim, 73, said: “It’s an awful shame what has happened and a total shock.”
Police confirmed that a 72-year-old woman had died following the incident. A spokesman added that there were no suspicious circumstances.
