Fears teenager accused of murdering Monifieth grandmother is too unstable to stand trial

Prosecutors fear a teenager accused of murdering a Tayside grandmother in South Africa is too unstable to stand trial, The Courier can reveal.
Sheree Prince, who is exhibiting “strange” behaviour, is accused of killing 74-year-old Sandra Malcolm in her Cape Town home just weeks before she was due to holiday in the Dundee area.
Now, prosecutors fear the 18-year-old may be too mentally unfit for the rigours of a murder trial and have asked for her to be confined in a state psychiatric facility while they decide how to proceed.
Mrs Malcolm, originally from Monifieth, was found with multiple stab wounds by her grandson in April, sparking a huge manhunt that led to the capture of Prince.
Nephew Colin Chalmers said the family had been left “distraught” by the killing.
A spokesman for South Africa’s National Prosecution Service said: “Sheree Prince appeared in court on Thursday and there was a preliminary inquiry and statements were handed in by the State as well as the South African Police Service’s clinical psychology unit.”
