Tributes are pouring in for Angus motorcycle road racer Andy Lawson after the rising star’s weekend death in a high-speed Ulster Grand Prix accident.
The Junior Manx Grand GP winner from Arbroath sustained fatal injuries after coming off his machine in a Supersport race on Saturday, devastating the sport’s close-knit community which lives with the ever-present spectre of tragedy as riders tackle twisting road courses at speeds of up to 200mph.
As Andy’s family, including his dad Mike, who himself was a successful racer, continue to come to terms with their loss, close friend and sponsor George Stewart, from Carnoustie, said the young rider’s popularity in the paddock had brought many messages of condolence.
The 24-year-old had been making his debut at the Dundrod event, just a couple of months after escaping serious injury in a major accident at the legendary Isle of Man TT.
Mr Stewart had followed Andy’s career with increasing pride as the young racer carved a path towards being one of the top road riders.
“He was a fun-loving young guy off the bike but extremely focused and competitive on board it,” he said.
“He was a very focused and determined young rider, very capable and very stylish, and that was the view of people who had watched him develop over the years.
“Andy’s aim was to become a professional rider and as a sponsor I was happy to help him towards that goal because of his very positive thoughts and infectious enthusiasm.
“As well as being a good rider, Andy was also very high in mechanical knowledge and knew how to get the best out of a racing bike. He also trusted those around him who made up his racing and support team.”
