Cameronbridge distillery misses targets to cut pollution

A Fife distillery has emerged as one of the worst polluting industrial sites in Scotland.
Diageo’s Cameronbridge grain distillery at Leven discharged 9,600 tonnes of total organic carbon and 400 tonnes of phosphorous into the Firth of Forth in 2013, figures from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) show.
The drinks giant failed to meet several targets it set itself to cut waste water contamination, climate emissions and landfill waste, according to the Sunday Herald.
Scottish Green MSP Alison Johnstone told the newspaper: “A highly profitable multinational really should be trying harder to do the right thing and minimise its environmental impact.”
Diageo pointed to investment of £100 million in renewable energy projects at its Scottish distilleries and said it was proud of its progress in working towards deliberately “very stretching” targets.
