‘I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart’ mum hails nurses who came to accident girl’s aid

The mum of a young girl who is “lucky to be alive” has spoken of the horrifying moment she found out her daughter had been hit by a lorry.
Ayspen Mitchell, who turned 10 on Thursday, suffered a fractured skull, brain swelling, a dislocated ankle and a crushed foot when she was knocked down and sent flying into oncoming traffic while crossing South Road in Dundee.
Her mother, Nicky Mitchell, 28, of Charleston, thanked passing nurses who cared for Ayspen as she lay on the road waiting for paramedics.
“If it wasn’t for them, Ayspen could have been in a much worse condition,” she said.
“They kept her calm and stopped her moving, which was so critical at that point.
“I don’t know their names but I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart.”
Nicky said being told of the accident by police had been “the most horrible thing in the world”, while the wait in hospital was an experience she “wouldn’t wish on anyone”.
Doctors believe Ayspen will make a full recovery but Nicky said she was “distraught” at missing her first day back at Ancrum Road Primary School.
