Sheriff not swallowing driver’s vodka claim

Sheriff not swallowing driver’s vodka claim

A drink-driver who was caught at almost five times the legal alcohol limit told a court she drank three-quarters of a bottle of vodka within 35 minutes of driving home.

Staff at Sainsbury’s in Kinross called police when they saw 55-year-old Jane Jenkins “intoxicated” and struggling with a self-scan machine.

About half an hour after leaving the supermarket, officers went to her home and breathalysed her. She tested positive and was arrested.

Yesterday Jenkins appeared on trial at Perth Sheriff Court. She was found guilty of driving with excess alcohol on May 19.

Jenkins, whose address was given as Cobwebs, near Kinross, said she had half a glass of cider before driving to the shops with her 18-year-old son.

When she returned she had about six or seven glasses of Sainsbury’s-brand vodka before police arrived at her door, she said.

Officers said they did not see any bottles or glasses in the house but Jenkins said they had been hidden from her husband who did not like her drinking during the day.

She said she was drinking because she was upset about a family matter but also because she had a day off work the next day.

Depute fiscal Stuart Richardson said: “Mrs Jenkins’ evidence is so ludicrous it does not raise a reasonable doubt.”

Sheriff Jack Brown said he found it hard to believe she had drunk so much vodka in such a short space of time.

He deferred sentence until October and Jenkins has been banned from driving in the interim.
