Already banned drink-driver awaits sentence in jail

An Angus man faces jail after a weekend drink-driving incident that saw him stopped by police at more than six times the legal alcohol limit.

Ronald J. Macfarlane, from Brechin, gave a specimen of breath that measured 137 microgrammes when stopped in the town’s Market Street on Sunday morning.

Macfarlane was taken in to police cells when it emerged he had already been banned from the road for drink-driving.

The 57-year-old will be kept in custody to await his sentence at the court later this month.

Macfarlane appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court and admitted three charges in front of Sheriff Gregor Murray.

He drove in Swan Street and Market Street, both Brechin, and on other streets unknown to prosecutors, while disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence.

He also registered a reading of 137 mics in 100 millilitres of breath during a roadside breath test for police with the legal limit being 22 mics.

A third charge alleged that Macfarlane drove without insurance in the August 30 incident.

A motion for bail was refused as it emerged Macfarlane had been banned from driving following analogous convictions.

Sentence was deferred to September 24 for the preparation of criminal justice social work reports and he was remanded in custody in the meantime.
