Fundraising cyclist thanks public for ‘wonderful’ tour

Warm welcome: Rhona Guild receives some support during one of her stops.

Angus cyclist Rhona Guild has completed an epic two-wheeled charity tour of Scotland.

In a marathon event aimed at raising awareness and cash support for Cancer Research UK, Rhona set off at the finale of Kirriemuir’s successful Relay for Life last month to visit every one of the other eight Relay communities across the country.

Her 812-mile trek took Rhona to the Courier Country destinations of Arbroath, Dundee, Perth and Dalgety Bay, but also involved the challenge of reaching Peterhead, Thurso, East Kilbride and Wigtown.

The Kirrie Relay vice-chairman and secretary has already raised more than £6,000 through her adventure in the saddle, with donations still being welcomed to boost the total from the Angus town’s event, which was a major success in mid-August.

Rhona said: “I wanted to take on a big enough challenge that would capture people’s attention. Although a regular, albeit slow, cyclist and runner, I did not start cycling until well into my forties and I am also asthmatic, which always made me think I could not be active.

“I am living proof that most people can be active if they are determined, and I can honestly say I am fitter now than I was in my twenties.

“I have been involved in Relay for Life in Kirriemuir since its inception in 2007 and I am very passionate about the event and the role it plays in both supporting people affected by cancer, encouraging people to talk about cancer and, of course, in raising the funds CRUK so badly need.

“Like most people, I have had family and close friends affected by cancer, giving me cause to ride in both remembrance and celebration.

“In every CRUK Relay site I was met with a very warm welcome and have gained lots of ideas for Kirriemuir’s next Relay, in 2017. Wigtown arranged their cheque presentation evening for my arrival on completion of the ride, so we had a wonderful double celebration. I felt very privileged to be part of their celebrations.

“The ride was a greater challenge than I anticipated, but a wonderful experience,” said Rhona, who can be backed at www.justgiving.com/rhona-guild.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to the many people who gave me such a warm reception on my travels, and a special thank you to my son who provided me with support throughout the ride, and, of course, to everyone who has donated to the cause.”
