A motorist whose car careered off a busy Perth road and struck a wall was seriously ill in hospital last night.
The 52-year-old is thought to have fallen ill at the wheel moments before the accident on Edinburgh Roadon Thursday morning. His teenage son was in the car at the time.
Passers-by rushed to the man’s aid before emergency services arrived on the scene just after 9.30am.
The driver’s 16-year-old son was not believed to have been injured.
The road was closed for several hours while collision investigators tried to establish what went wrong.
Markings on the wall suggest the car had scraped along for several feet before coming to a halt.
Police sergeant Debbie Allen said: “Two people were involved in a one-vehicle collision while heading towards Perth on Edinburgh Road. The carcollided with a wall.
“The 52-year-old male driver was conveyed to hospital by ambulanceservices in a serious condition.”
She added: “The driver receivedmedical attention from passers-by before police and ambulance crews arrived. The police were on the scene promptly as two cars from the nearby college were driving by after theincident occurred.
“The father was taken to hospital by ambulance and his son accompanied his family to the hospital.”
Residents said they heard a loud bang from outside, followed by sirens.
Graham McLean, 70, who lives on Edinburgh Road, said: “I looked out and there were about five emergencyvehicles, police cars and ambulances, on the road.”
Traffic was diverted along Friarton Road and Marshall Place.
