Bowling bobby Darren Burnett was named Sports Personality of the Year at the Angus Sports Awards.

A stellar 2014 saw Arbroath policeman Darren win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow when competing for Scotland in the gents lawn bowls singles.

The Arbroath & District Indoor Bowling Club member also won the World Bowls Tour titles at the Indoor Singles Championships and the Super Bowl Pairs Championship.

Darren was unable to appear at the ceremony at Forfar’s Reid Hall as he was competing for Scotland in the British Championships.

However, in a video message, he said: “I’d like to congratulate all the winners and congratulate everybody in the area who bring sport to the fore.

“It’s great to receive an award like this after the fantastic year I had last year.”

Swimmer Maria Orsi, who won three medals for the GB team at the Special Olympics’ European Summer Games, was named Sports Personality of the Year Award for People with a Disability.

Forfar Sailing Club member Anna Sturrock was named Young Sports Personality of the Year. Last year she represented the British Sailing Team during the Irish Topper Nationals and was 1st Lady.

The Service to Sport Award went to Eddie Wilmott of St Thomas Amateur Swimming Club, who has been involved with the sport for more than 30 years.

During this time he has been a timekeeper, moving on to become a judge, starter and referee. He was president of St Thomas ASC for 25 years before stepping down to take up the role of President of the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association.

Other winners were Dorothea Jackson of Strathmore Rugby Club (club volunteer of the year), Jill Cassidy of Timmergreens Primary School (school sport volunteer of the year), Colin Christie of Montrose & District Athletics Club (coach of the year) and Tayside Musketeers Basketball Club Junior Women’s Team (team of the year).

The awards are organised by Angus Council’s sports development team to honour the commitment, achievements and dedication of individuals and teams involved in sport across Angus.

Angus Council communities vice convenor Councillor Jeanette Gaul said: “It is fantastic for us to be able to host the Angus Sports Awards ceremony to say a massive well done to our local sports volunteers and celebrate sporting achievements across the county in what has been an amazing year for sport across Scotland and Angus.
