Demolition of Dundee Station began despite fears the operation would have to be abandoned due to the high winds.
However, the effort has had to be scaled back as contractors will have insufficient time to remove the full bridge structure which lies under the station building in time for the rail lines to be returned to full use by Thursday’s resumption of train services.
Gusts of up to 60mph meant cranes to be used in the operation could not be risked and following a meeting it was decided to curtail the full removal of the bridge structure to a future date.
Work to remove the main building will however still take place and both the site and the rail lines will be cleared by 6am on Friday, Dundee City Council project manager Gerry Conway confirmed.
“We managed to get the protection mats down to cover the tracks and keep them safe from any debris but the high winds meant we couldn’t get the cranes to operate at first,” he said.
“It won’t have a long-term effect on the overall project though, we have other windows during the year and even the next Christmas period is available to us.”
