Chris Kane may not have earned himself a goal for St Johnstone yet.
But the young striker has earned himself a new three-year deal and, more importantly, he’s earned the respect of his team-mates.
Kane is confident that the goals will soon start to flow, but his biggest concern is doing his bit for the team.
And on that front, he’s got nothing to fret about.
“I’m hoping the goal will come soon,” the 20-year-old said.
“It’s getting closer and closer. I thought I’d got it on Saturday. I was inches away.
“I’m hoping that if I keep getting into good positions it’s just a matter of time before it comes.
“I’m not allowing myself to be disappointed.
“The boys have been telling me that what I’ve been doing for the team has been brilliant and that I’m not giving defenders a minute’s peace.
“So I’m happy with that.”
He added: “I’m delighted to sign the new deal. It gives me a bit of stability.
“I’ve trained away and done my best when I got a chance and I feel like a part of the team now.
“I got my first chance up in Inverness. It wasn’t an easy game to come into off the bench!
“I put myself about and the manager must have liked what he saw because he’s been playing me a lot since.
“I feel myself that I’ve done quite well.”
Kane insists that he hasn’t found inevitable comparisons with Stevie May to become a burden.
“I’ve not felt any pressure,” he pointed out.
“Obviously the fans have thought ‘is this going to be the next Stevie May?’ But the manager has never seen it like that. He’s always made it clear we’re different types of player.”
Like May before him, Kane is benefitting from the wise words of experienced side-kick, Steven MacLean, as well as regular visits to the gym.
He said: “Macca is always talking. He never lets up good and bad!
“He’s a great professional to play alongside. He’s a top guy and a top player.
“I know when I’ve done something wrong.”
He continued: “I spoke to Stevie a bit while he was here to pick up a few things and I could see what he did in the gym.
“I’ve tried to get down as much as I can. I go with Dylan Easton and the two of us are bulking up.
“You can feel the benefit in games.
“But it comes down to experience as well. You don’t have to be huge to throw defenders about. You just need to know when to back in and things like that.
“I need the experience of going out on loan and I needed to bulk up.
“Playing against experienced players has definitely brought me on.
“There were injuries and suspensions in the squad when I came back and the manager told me that I would get my chance.”
