Shocked owner’s vow to reopen Kingarroch Inn after fire

The Kingarroch Inn in Craigrothie was gutted by fire on Sunday.
The Kingarroch Inn in Craigrothie was gutted by fire on Sunday.

The owner of a renowned Fife restaurant gutted by fire has vowed to reopen the venue as soon as possible.

Bryan Coghill said he will try to re-establish the Kingarroch Inn in Craigrothie, after it was left gutted by a major blaze on Sunday night.

Fire crews from across Fife were called to extinguish the flames, with plumes of smoke billowing from the building.

Mr Coghill, who also runs the Meldrums Hotel in Ceres, confirmed nobody was hurt in the fire but that the property had been left devastated.

“We were open all day on Sunday,” he said. “The fire started at the back of the building and it went right through.

“We’re just waiting on the insurance to be sorted out, and whatever else, now.”

Asked if he planned to reopen the venue, he continued: “Of course. We just have to go through it all and try and get back as soon as possible. It’s just a case of carrying on and we’ve still got the hotel.”

Fire officers were still at the scene on Monday morning with an investigation team to examine the building to determine the source of the blaze.

A police officer also remained at the property to stop people entering the site.

The flames destroyed both floors of the building and decimated the roof. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service despatched crews from throughout Fife, and at one point appliances from Cupar, Methil, Glenrothes, St Andrews and Dunfermline were all in attendance.

Such was the intensity of the fire, crews that started tackling the flames inside the building were forced to withdraw.

Having been alerted to the incident at 4.30pm, it took firefighters around 10 hours to bring the inferno under control.

Confirming they would investigate the cause of the fire, commander David Farries said: “This was a serious fire requiring a quick and effective response from firefighters.

“It became apparent that the main section of the building could not be saved so our efforts were concentrated on protecting the remainder of the premises from further fire spread and damage.”
