The UK’s Energy Minister must lobby for a potential £2 billion windfarm off the Fife coast to base its operations in Dundee, an MP has said.
Chris Law invited Andrea Leadsom to the city in a bid to make the port the place Mainstream Renewable Power, the company behind the Neart na Gaoithe (NNG) development off Fife Ness, could set up shop.
But a major stumbling block comes in the form of a legal challenge lodged by RSPB Scotland into the Scottish Ministers decision to grant consent.
Dundee West representative Mr Law used a question time session at Westminster to ask the minister to encourage companies associated with the projects to base themselves by the Tay.
Ms Leadsom responded that the UK Government is committed to the continued growth of UK offshore wind, where Britain is already the world leader.
She said: “The industry is a huge potential source of jobs and growth and we will always focus on maximising UK content in the supply chain.
“However, the decision on where to base one company’s operations is a commercial decision for them.
“My officials are working closely with the developer and the Scottish Government to maximise the use of UK content in the windfarm.”
Mr Law said: “Following on from this I will be writing today to the minister to invite her to Dundee to see our port here.
“It’s vital that we are in the running here for this work and I am determined that we make sure we are on the radar for this and don’t miss out on it, as we did with the oil boom in the past.”
