Kirkcaldy pair accused of human trafficking offences

Two people suspected of being involved in human trafficking have been remanded in custody.

Ana Paula Calder, 35, and Jose Martins Barbosa, 44, from Kirkcaldy, were arrested on Friday and appeared at the town’s sheriff court on Monday.

Both were charged under the Criminal Justice Scotland Act accused of trading in prostitution or brothel keeping.

Neither made any plea nor declaration and were held in custody pending further inquiries.

A Crown Office spokesman said the pair would appear again within eight days.

Their arrests followed a police operation which involved officers from across Scotland.

Police attended at addresses in Fife, Tayside, Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway and removed eight alleged victims.

A police spokeswoman refused to reveal the ages of the people found in the properties or if they were male or female.
