Montrose boss wants to finish league season on a high

Montrose have started checking out their prospective play-off opponents, but Links Park boss Paul Hegarty is still focused on finishing the league season with a flourish.

And an away win at promotion-chasing East Stirling has shown Hegarty that his players have the same mindset.

“It’s important we get a few good results to take into the play-offs,” the experienced manager pointed out.

“The league matches are big games and we want to show a bit of consistency.

“Last week wasn’t a particularly pretty game, but we got a gritty, hard-earned win. We grinded out the result, and that was really pleasing for me to see.

“It was only our second clean-sheet since I took over. As an ex-defender, I know what a positive that can be for a team.

“If we keep this up, we’ll be going into the play-offs with a spring in our step.”

Montrose are at home to in-form Elgin City this afternoon.

Hegarty noted: “I’m happy that we’re playing another team vying for fourth place. They’ve got a lot to play for.

“That might be the case in our other remaining matches as well.

“The games will be competitive and it will help keep our intensity high for the play-offs.”

The scouting process has begun ahead of those all-or-nothing battles against either Brora Rangers or Edinburgh City.

“John Holt went down to Whitehill Welfare to watch Edinburgh City on Wednesday,” Hegarty reported.

“Brora have their last league game on Saturday, so that will be a bit more difficult.

“But we’ll obviously get the chance to see the two teams play each other, and either myself or John will go to those.”

Paul Watson is suspended this afternoon, while Marvin Andrews (ankle) and Paul Harkins (hamstring) will also miss out.
