Young achievers recognised at Forfar awards ceremony

The superb achievements of Angus youngsters across a spectrum stretching from sport to science have been recognised.

At the annual Angus Young Achievers event in Forfar’s Reid Hall, more than 220 youngsters from schools throughout the district received awards from special guest local artist Louise Ritchie in honour of their success in a host of fields.

Angus education convener Sheena Welsh and the council’s executive director (people) Margo Williamson completed the platform party for the event, congratulating each of the award recipients.

The Young Achievers programme has been running for a number of years and recognises youngsters who have been placed in the top three in a national competition, have represented their country or made an outstanding contribution to their community.

Once again the field of winners included world, British and Scottish champions in a range of sports, alongside young students who have flown the Angus flag with distinction at home and abroad.

Award winners were joined at the Forfar ceremony by proud family members and teachers from primary and secondary schools throughout the county.

In keeping with tradition, the master of ceremonies role was shared between two senior pupils, with Rachael Smith and Morgan Brooke Johnson of Arbroath Academy performing this year’s duties.

Entertainment was also provided by talented pupils in the form of the Blend from Webster’s High in Kirriemuir, comprising of Jack Laird, Aimee Kilcoyne and Philip Ironside.
