Thousands of people have signed an online petition demanding the speed limit is reduced on a road that claimed the life of a Dundee student.

Dundee and Angus College student Karen Gibson, 22, died on Wednesday after her car crashed on the Carlisle Road, near Hamilton, on Monday night.

More than 3,000 people, many from Dundee, have now signed the petition asking South Lanarshire Council to reduce the speed limit on the road between Larkhall and Ferniegair from 50 to 30mph.

The petition states: “There also needs to be speed cameras, traffic lights, roundabout etc for people to stick to the limit and slow down and proper barriers put in place. It is a dangerous stretch of road that has claimed the lives of many over the years and recently has been getting worse.”

Rebekah Brown, from Dundee, who signed the petition, wrote: “One life being taken itself it’s so heartbreaking for so many others surrounding that person.

“Any death can feel like the end of the world for someone and unfortunately I’ve seen that a girl has not pulled through an accident on this road and it’s so tragic.”

Kelly Allan, also from Dundee, posted: “I know many people who have been affected by the recent death on this road.”

Lindsey Graham, from Larkhall, wrote: “My friend Karen Gibson died on this road this week and it is heartbreaking.”

Emergency services rushed to the scene just after 8.20pm on Monday and rescued the former barmaid from her vehicle.

But despite the efforts of hospital staff, Karen, who used to work in Boudoir Bar and Beau Nightclub, could not be saved.

Karen’s Facebook account described her as a ‘character and parade performer at Disneyland Paris’ with her residency also described as the French capital.

Police said that inquiries were continuing and a report had been submitted to the procurator fiscal.
