The festive season arrived in Dundee with a bang last night as a stunning fireworks display brought the first day of the city’s Christmas Street Festival to a close.

The explosives brought blooms of light to the night sky, accompanied by one of the world’s best-known musical scores the theme from Star Wars.

It was just one part of a fun-filled day that brought thousands of visitors of all ages out to play.

A short time earlier, The Black Watch had paraded down Reform Street, leading a torchlight procession to the city square.Click here for a full photo galleryThere, as a huge crowd looked on, Deputy Lord Provost Christina Roberts introduced an extra-special guest, dressed all in red.

Santa was invited to bring light to the darkness by switching on the Christmas Lights on streets throughout the heart of the city.

The festive fun had begun earlier in the day with the first-ever Pop-Up Dundee Christmas Market.

Thousands of visitors enjoyed street food from a tented village, together with processions, performances by choirs and carol singers, shops offering a host of gift ideas and even an outdoor ceilidh for those keen to get into the Festive swing of things.

The market continues today, when it will be joined by the biggest farmers’ Market Dundee has ever hosted.
