Promoters of a major boxing showcase in Dundee have promised some tough tests for the hometown fighters set to appear on the bill next month.
Dundee trio ‘Iron’ Mike Towell, Ronnie ‘The Shark’ Clark and Jamie Wilson will all be in action at the Caird Hall on March 14 as part of ‘The Pride of Dundee’ event, with Fife prospect Connor Law also expected to feature on the undercard.
Despite home advantage and a partisan crowd though, co-organiser Colin Bellshaw stressed yesterday that he is looking to bring in international opponents who will pose the local lads a real challenge.
“All three Dundee fighters have the ability and commitment to bring major title fights to Dundee and we hope this show is the start of consistent top level boxing in Dundee,” he told Courier Sport.
“We are looking forward to our first show at the Caird Hall and the response from the Dundee support has been tremendous.”
Light middleweight Towell has already claimed the Scottish and British Masters titles within just five professional fights, and Bellshaw stressed that organisers were scouring the European ranks for a higher level opponent.
An international test will also be lined up for super flyweight Wilson, who won the British Masters bronze title in November and is being earmarked for a British title shot in the near future, while Clark is looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat last time out.
“Ronnie has been on the wrong end of a few very close decisions away from home,” Bellshaw added.
“He is determined to deliver a top class performance to force his way back to a shot at the Lonsdale belt and we are delighted to give him the opportunity to show his class in front of his home support.”
Meanwhile, Fife-based lightweight Andrejs Podusovs is vying for the Scottish area lightweight title when he takes on Jordan McCorry at a show at Paisley’s Lagoon Centre this evening.
The Latvian-born fighter, who now boxes out of Glenrothes, lost his last bout against Marek Laskowski last time around but is more than capable of inflicting a first defeat on champion McCorry when they square off tonight.
The Cambuslang fighter has won eight and drawn one of his nine professional bouts so far.
