Dundee boss John Brown watched his side run Inverness Caley close in the League Cup and hopes their showing will help spark their Championship campaign into life.
The Dark Blues crashed out of their second cup competition of the season courtesy of Billy McKay’s 10th-minute strike, but they were far from disgraced after putting in a much-improved performance in front of their own fans.
And with that in mind, Brown believes his players should take great heart from the way they competed with one of Scotland in-form sides.
“We’ve had the better chances but we don’t score,” he said. “That’s been our downfall this season, but to be fair their goalkeeper makes a fantastic save from Craig Beattie in the first half and then at the death he’s saved from Ryan Conroy.
“So we’ve got to try and take positives and kick on with our season. Terry (Butcher) knows that we gave his team a right good game tonight, but it’s cup football.
“If you think of previous rounds, there have been a few shocks, and there was nearly a shock here tonight. But I’ve just got to commend my players for their effort.”
Brown bemoaned his team’s lack of cutting edge after drawing a blank, but was no doubt heartened by the chances his side created against the team currently leading the Premiership.
He admitted: “We’ve got to start putting the ball in the net. But tonight they had a goalkeeper who was unplayable.”
